A three day masterclass that will introduce you to the process of bronze casting, with expert tuition by David Snoo Wilson. You will learn how the lost wax process works and develop your own wax model using basic carving techniques.

David will present the metal casting process in this hands-on workshop with his travelling foundry and you will be shown all of the benefits of this process.

This is an ideal course for anyone interested in bronze casting or learning about the process of casting metal for sculpture. No previous experience of working with metal is required and by the end of the three days you will have a fully patinated bronze sculpture that you can take home with you.

Accommodation

We can provide accommodation with this course in one of our on site bedrooms. You will be provided with your own en-suite bedroom and all linen, towels and bathroom products are provided. A continental breakfast is also included along with lunch, dinner and refreshments throughout your stay with us.

YOUR TUTOR

David Snoo Wilson is an artist and educator and uniquely at the heart of his studio practice is the beautiful alchemy of melting metal.

As an educator and technician David has worked at the RCA running the foundry and internationally has run courses and workshops across Europe.  He specialises in bell casting and resides in Bristol where he founded Ore and Ingot

Who is this course suitable for?

Suitable for all levels – no previous experience needed. Come with or without skills as you will learn both ways.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring along some ideas of what to make.
Be that preparatory sketches or models that you have already created.
You also will need some old clothing, made from natural fibers (cotton, wool, etc) they may get dirty so make sure these are old clothes!
Boots are preferable foot ware.
If you have modelling tools please do bring along, but do not fret if not as these will be provided.
If you have any molds please bring along.

What’s included?

This workshop involves three consecutive days where you will learn a basic introduction into lost wax bronze casting, using the ceramic shell casting techniques

We will be using the ‘direct wax casting’ technique which essentially means using wax to make a model, forming and sculpting it like clay or plasticine, then casting these objects in bronze.

Materials will be included in price upto 1kg of Bronze.

Day 1

10.00am – 4.30pm (including lunch)

Introduction to Ore and Ingot, the Travelling Foundry and wax working

Day 2

10.00am – 4.30pm (including lunch)

Develop and refine your own wax model

Develop the ceramic shell

Introduction to smelting and casting preparations

Day 3

Day 3: 10.00am – 4.30pm (including lunch)

The last day is the pour day and will begin with burning out the mold, this is the ‘lost wax’ part of the process. In the afternoon, you will learn about pouring bronze artworks and get an introduction into metal finishing techniques.

By the end of the weekend, you will have your very own bronze sculpture.

Please note: This course allows for 1kg bronze sculptures to be made.  If you would like to create a ‘larger than normal’ sculpture then these are priced at £50 per kg and are payable in addition at the end of the course.
